UPGRADED IRRIGATION SYSTEM

A refurbished irrigation system was recently handed over to the Motlhaka Horticulture Farm, enabling community farmers to grow quality crops more efficiently, conserve water and deliver their produce to local markets much quicker. This support forms part of an ongoing enterprise development programme, working to help revitalise agricultural projects and strengthen food security within the Ramotshere Moiloa Local Municipality.

“We are very grateful for this support. Before the new irrigation canals were built, getting water from the dam to our fields was very difficult, and we often had to rely on rainfall. Now water reaches our plots more easily, which has saved us time, improved our farming and brought greater cooperation among the farmers,” shared Mr. Teko David Modisaotsile, an elderly member of the Motlhaka Cooperative for over 10 years.

Located in Dinokana Village near Zeerust, Motlhaka Horticulture Farm is home to 20 local farmers, most of whom are elderly community members. Through the programme, the farm has already created 12 temporary and 20 permanent jobs, providing a vital source of income and support for local families.

The farm previously relied on an outdated irrigation method that drew water from the Ga-Moetsane River using traditional techniques. This often resulted in inefficient water distribution, water loss and the overgrowth of weeds, while crops further from the water source remained under-irrigated. The newly refurbished and expanded irrigation system, funded through the programme, now allows for improved water distribution across the farm, helping farmers manage their crops more effectively and increase overall productivity.

“The upgraded irrigation system is about giving farmers the tools they need to succeed. By improving water access and efficiency on the farm, the programme is helping farmers increase production, deliver produce faster and build a more sustainable future for their community,” said Qinisani Siveshe, Social Performance Manager at Zeerust Solar, which funds the programme.

Formerly known as Ko Reising, the farm produces a variety of crops including maize, wheat, potatoes, green beans and tomatoes. Much of the produce is currently sold informally within the local community, particularly during festive periods, although the farmers hope to expand into formal markets as production continues to grow.

Motlhaka Horticulture Farm is one of several agricultural enterprises being revived through the Enterprise Development Programme, which focuses on empowering local SMMEs, creating employment opportunities and improving food security in the region.
